Description
The Naples Underground tour leads you beneath the streets of the historic centre, where 2,400 years of the city's story sit layer upon layer. Your guide reads those layers as archaeology, history, anthropology and geology, so the visit explains how Naples grew from the ancient Greeks to today.
Down below you pass through:
- the Greek-Roman Aqueduct
- what is left of the Roman Theatre
- the Summa Cavea, a section of the theatre only recently brought back to light
The guide speaks English or Italian. For other languages, a free multilingual app is available to download at the start, and a printed brochure in several languages is handed out. Photos are allowed. The visit lasts roughly an hour and a half to two hours, always with the guide, never alone. The ticket gives skip-the-line entry, which shortens the wait in high season but is not a priority pass. Add the pizza option and you finish with a Margherita or Marinara and a soft drink.
The route has 121 steps, up and down, and no lifts, so it does not suit wheelchair users, people with limited mobility or anyone uneasy in enclosed spaces. Comfortable shoes help, and school-age children should carry a small torch.
